Dental Sealant

Dental Sealant

What is a sealant?

A sealant is a preventative coating that we place in children and sometimes adults to prevent the chance of tooth decay. We believe in preserving the natural teeth as much as possible and sealants are an easy way to help you keep your teeth healthy.

When is sealant application recommended?

When the adult molars first appear, sealants are applied; besides, they can be applied, as per need later in life.

  • The durability of sealant fillings depends on the individual’s oral habits; however, they can endure several years before having to replace them.
  • Sealants can safeguard teeth from decay for several years; however, it needs to be regularly examined for wear and breakage at routine dental visits. In case, the seal starts to chip off the tooth, food and bacteria can accrue beneath the seal, which can lead to tooth decay.
  • Adhering to a balanced diet, appropriate dental care, and regular visits to your local dentist will help in the life of your new sealants.

Ever wondered if there was a way to prevent decays forming on your back teeth?
Well sealants are your answer!

Dental fissure sealants are a dental treatment intended to prevent tooth decay. Applying these sealants is a quick and painless procedure!

Sealant is commonly applied to the grooves, and pits of the back molars. The sealants provide a barrier against bacteria that can cause plaque. They are designed to prevent tooth decay and cavities. They provide extra protection from decay, even for those who drink fluoridated water and brush with fluoride toothpaste. Complications are very rare but can include an allergic reaction to the sealants, or a change in your bite if the sealant layer is thick which can be adjusted.

Curious about if you need sealants or not?

Well your dentist might advise you to have fissure sealants if you have large grooves or pits in your teeth. This would be discussed between you and your dentist to see if they are necessary, as not all teeth need sealants.

It is a very simple procedure that includes these steps:

  1. Clean and dry the tooth
  2.  Prepare the tooth surface so the sealants bond well
  3.  Paint on the liquid sealant, which flows into the deep grooves and pits
  4.  Bond and harden the sealant with strong light
  5.  Check the bite and polish off excess sealant

Is sealant application for dental procedures painful for kids?

Sealant application is a simple and painless dental procedure that needs a few minutes per tooth.

  • No need to drill or remove any tooth structure for applying dental sealants.
  • The dental procedure starts with a dental cleaning, which is followed by the application of a special gel onto the chewing surface.
  • Then the tooth is rinsed and dried thoroughly, following the sealant applied onto the chewing surfaces of the tooth.
  • For solidifying the sealant faster, a special curing light may be used.
  • Each tooth requires one minute for the sealant to get fixed.

Want to know if there are any other alternatives to sealants?

There is one alternative which is fluoride varnish. This can be applied to the teeth by a dentist, however, fluoride varnishes are mostly used in young children at high risk of developing cavities. These need to be applied 2 to 4 times each year
